Or, if you have a new/unopened pack of 3x5 cards you can measure it's
thickness and use that with how many cards in a package to determine the
total estimate.

Depending on the thickness of the cards, between 75-100 per inch. A simple
way to figure this out is to measure two inches of cards, count them, divide
by two, and then use that figure for the whole index.
