NASA Photo Archives

I realize that NASA probably has a disaster strategy plan, but perhaps
someone should send them a copy in regards to the photographic collection.
I've been the archives, and believe me, this is a major loss to our
profession; however, I do not think that digitizing the collection and
discarding the originals is in anyway a suitable solution, this would in
fact create a larger problem, especially when the software and media formats
become obsolete. But, a digitized copy of the collection would prevent the
complete and irrevocable loss of a considerable amount of a photographic
collection, especially one like Goddard's. This is why archives should be
anywhere else other than on the bottom floor.

Oh lordy. Did you notice the final sentence of the article?

"The agency is studying the possibility of digitizing the collection and
eliminating the paper altogether"
Once again, some genius drops a line like that under the assumption that
digitization will solve the entire problem. Considering that I believe
(somebody correct me if I'm wrong) the average DPI on a printed photograph
is considerably higher than can be cost effectively digitized, electonic
copies will undoubtedly lose some of the quality of the originals. Add to
that all the issues discussed in the Digitization article by Stuart Lee
(RAIN of a few days ago) and this kind of thing is just asking for trouble.
Sheesh.
