Archival Assistant job posting (Chicago, IL)



The JAPANESE AMERICAN SERVICE COMMITTEE (JASC) is a
non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to
serving the needs of the Japanese American community
in the Chicago metropolitan area.

Archival Assistant (Temporary Part-Time):
Prepares archival records in all formats for use and
assists researchers with and monitors researchers? use
of archival records in all formats.

Job Responsibilities and Duties:
Under the direction of the Archivist, the Archival
Assistant will:
·Process records of the JASC including arranging
material chronologically and alphabetically, removing
exact duplicates, and rehousing and labeling records.
·Write descriptive inventories and prepare box/folder
lists for processed records.
·Provide reference services for researchers including
greeting, orienting, and monitoring researchers and
answering routine inquiries.
·Retrieve boxes from storage.
·Photocopy material for researchers.
·Follow appropriate security and handling procedures
at all times, especially when monitoring researchers.
·Undertake other duties as assigned including general
office duties.

Knowledge/Skill/Ability:
·A high school diploma or equivalent is required.  A
bachelor?s degree from an accredited college or
university with a major in the humanities or social
sciences is preferred.
·Experience handling and comprehending original
documents preferred.
·Knowledge of word processing and computers is
required.  Experience with file keeping systems is
required.  Knowledge of computer database management
is preferred.
·Knowledge of Japanese or Japanese American culture is
preferred.  Knowledge of Japanese language is an
asset.
·Ability to work with a variety of people with poise
and diplomacy at all times.
·Ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced
environment.
·Ability to lift up to 40 pounds.

Equipment:
Telephone, voicemail, typewriter, computer (including
Windows, MS Word, MS Excel, MS Access, and the
Internet), photocopier, and facsimile machine.

Dates:  September 17, 2001 (or later) to September 30,
2002

Salary:  $8.00-$10.00/hour for 10-12 hours/week during
business hours (M-F, 9-5)
