COURT RECORDS PROJECT ARCHIVIST

The Connecticut State Library is pleased to announce the availability of a durational grant-funded position in the State Archives.  This full-time position is funded by NHPRC for one year and there is a possibility of funding for a second year.  The project archivist will process, arrange, and describe early Connecticut court records and help develop a plan for improving the preservation of and access to historically important and underutilized judicial records in the State Archives.  Court records are often difficult to use, but they contain information vital to understanding significant aspects of the State's economic, legal, and social history, not to mention documentation of minority groups.  The State Archives is looking for a dynamic self-starter who understands the historical significance of these records.  This is an exciting opportunity for the successful candidate to gain professional experience, to enhance one's knowledge of neglected historical sources, and to work with a skilled team of experienced professionals in a collegial, participatory environment.  The Archivist will work at the Connecticut State Library and report to the Assistant State Archivist.  The State Library is the chief research repository for those studying the executive, judicial, and legislative branches of state government and it provides services to state and local governments, citizens of Connecticut, and researchers from other states and countries.  This project, in addition to improving access to an important body of judicial records, will provide the model for the preservation of court records of this and other states.  

Responsibilities include:  processing files of Litchfield County and Superior Courts and New London County and Superior Courts to the end of the year 1855; assisting in the creation of an ACCESS database to cases involving African Americans and Native Americans found in these court records; preparing finding aids for these records; and supervising a project assistant in the second year of the project.  Person will also prepare reports as needed and may make oral presentations.  

Qualifications:  A graduate degree in American history, archival administration, and/or library science with significant archives curriculum component together with a minimum of one year full-time professional work.  Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of archival science and knowledge of archival preservation.  Ability to supervise, interpersonal skills, oral/written skills, and ability to create and use databases required.  Preferred:  Experience in processing archival records and preparing finding aids.  Experience in using MS Word for Windows and databases.  Knowledge of New England history and judicial records for the period 1700-1855 desired.  Starting Salary:  $48,435 per year plus fringe benefits.
