Associate Librarian Range: 3P2 $45,450 - $58,750

The Hoover Institution on War, Revolution and Peace is a public policy research center devoted to the advanced study of domestic and international affairs, founded at Stanford University in 1919 by Herbert Hoover, the 31st President of the United States. The Institution's Library and Archives, with more than 1.6 million volumes and more than fifty million documents, constitute one of the world's largest repositories of materials on twentieth-century social, economic, and political change.

The Original Cataloger will head the Pamphlet Unit of the Hoover Library, and be responsible for materials in a variety of Western and Slavic languages that cover Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and perhaps other areas as well. Under the direction of the Archivist, the Original Cataloger will be responsible for the following:


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

* Perform descriptive and subject cataloging (original and complex copy) of pamphlet materials (monographic and other formats) dealing with twentieth century history, politics and socio-economic movements.

* May need to finish some recon work and maintain and correct errors in existing database.

* Will be responsible for the classification of materials according to the Library of Congress system.

* Will be responsible for the possible revision of copy cataloging performed by paraprofessionals.

* Will hire, train, and supervise two library specialists.

* Will perform other departmental and university duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS:

I. Required: ALA-accredited M.L.S. or equivalent. Knowledge of or experience using AACR2, LCSH, LCRIs, USMARC bibliographic data, LC classification, automated library systems (OCLC, NOTIS, Unicorn, etc.), and other cataloging tools. Experience with or ability to perform original cataloging in a research library. Proficiency in at least one Western European language. Ability to communicate clearly in written and spoken English. Ability to function successfully as a contributing team member in a production-oriented environment. Knowledge of current trends in cataloging and national standards for bibliographic control. Proven supervisory experience.

II. Preferred: Reading knowledge of additional relevant foreign languages (Russian or Polish especially desirable). A degree in a field related to twentieth century history and politics. Knowledge of or experience with USMARC holdings and authority data. Experience in acquisitions and/or serials, including knowledge of CONSER. Knowledge of or experience with NACO. Knowledge of pc hardware and software.
