Re: Automating Vertical File Indexes

<pre>

Looking through numerous responses, I have
not yet seen any advocates of PROCITE. We
have used this for indexing, cataloging of
manuscripts, bibliographies, container lists
etc. These materials can easily be placed on the
web site of your institution. It is inexpensive.
Everything is accessible by word or any subject
terms you need.I.e. Type or scan in your descriptive/
container lists and every word will be accessible.

Obviously I like it. The company will be glad to
send you information and at one time a sample disc
could be requested.

There are templates for everything you would need.
Student assistants can "fill in the blanks" with
very little training.

We're looking at computerizing a rather complex card system that
provides access to our faculty-alumni vertical files; our subject
vertical files; our campus publications vertical files; university
archives photographs; and the index to campus newspapers; as well as
pointers to the finding aids for archival and manuscript collections and
archives books. None of the archival, library, museum, or indexing
software we've looked at seems to exactly fit our needs. What I envision
is a relational database with umpteen tables, all linked through
authority records for people, offices, and subjects. (Of course it's
full of many-to-many relationships.) The authority records need to hold
information as well as names and allow for hierarchies of terms. It
should be easy for student workers to enter data, and support a nice
fast public interface over the Web. Has anyone out there tackled this
type of problem? What worked (or didn't)? Any advice or comment is
welcome, please! It would be so nice to stop typing all these 3x5
cards...
