Visual Materials Archivist

Mellon Foundation grant-funded project, based at the New-York Historical Society Library. Position is funded until December 31, 2002.

Description: Process prints, photographs, and architectural collections at the New-York Historical Society Library. Create finding aids and item-level databases and revise existing cataloging. Identify items needing conservation or rehousing. Assist in overseeing the work of support staff and volunteers.

Qualifications: ALA accredited MLS or M.A. in art history, American history, or architectural history; 2 years relevant experience including the arrangement and description of visual materials such as photographs or architectural records; database experience; ability to work independently or as part of a team and to manage multiple complex tasks simultaneously; ability to work comfortably and productively in a complex work environment. Knowledge of American and/or New York history preferred.

Salary: Salary commensurate with background and experience. Minimum: $35,000. Attractive benefits package.

Located next to Central Park on Manhattan's Upper West Side, The New-York Historical Society is a principal resource for the study of American history and life. It is home to the recently opened Henry Luce III Center for the Study of American Culture, which showcases the Society's museum collections, and to one of the oldest research libraries in the country. The New-York Historical Society Library has been affiliated with the New York University Libraries since 1997. Its collections encompass approximately 400,000 volumes; 7,000 linear feet of manuscripts, including diaries, letters, and military, political and business records; and an estimated one million items in its print, photograph and architecture collections. The Society's visual collections are especially strong in pre-1900 U.S. history and culture as well as the development of photography and professional architecture in the United States.
