Re: Results: Researchers in hiding?

We've noticed the same thing here at the Library. We have had a major drop
in visitors since September 11th but things are beginning to pick up.
Perhaps it's due to the free Metro fares (wekends only) and other
inducements.

One thing that is very interesting is the increasing number of barricades
and fences that are going up on Capitol Hill. The street between the
Cannon Building and the Madison building is now blocked off with access
allowed to only those with parking permits. Some of the areas on the
Capitol grounds are blocked with barbed wire and the grassy area where the
National Book festival was held the weekend before the attacks is now
totally fenced off. Areas around many of the House and Senate office
buildings are blocked off and some popular parking areas are off limits
because of their proximity to entrances to House and Senate parking areas.
There is talk of totally blocking off all the street around the Capitol,
something that the DC government objects to (they are still trying to open
up the areas around the White House that have been blocked to vechicular
traffic) but will not be able to stop if the decision is made to block the
streets.

So if you're coming to Capitol Hill take Metro; driving could be hazardous
to your mental health.
