NEWS RELEASE
October 15, 2001

FIRST JOINT CONFERENCE OF ARLIS/NA AND VRA IN ST.
LOUIS Mar. 21-26, 2002

WHAT:  Approximately 700 art librarians, visual
resources curators, publishers and special guests
are expected at the first joint conference of the
Art Libraries Society of North America (ARLIS/NA)
and the Visual Resources Association (VRA) to be
held in St. Louis Missouri, from March 21-26,
2002.  The conference includes 10 panel sessions,
6 seminar sessions, 9 workshops and 2 plenary
sessions. Topics will address our changing
research and collections environments, the
redefinition of the roles and responsibilities in
our professions, best strategies for managing the
tasks and projects that lay ahead, and the most
challenging issues that face our culture at large.



WHEN: March 21-26, 2002


WHERE: The Hyatt Regency Hotel at Union Station,
St. Louis housed in what was once the second
busiest train station in the nation and is now on
the national register of historic places. This
Romanesque Revival structure, designed by the
architect Theodore Link, has been restored to its
former glory, and features elegant rooms, dramatic
public spaces, and dozens of on-site eating,
shopping, and entertainment venues.


HIGHLIGHTS:

A NINCH (the National Initiative for a Networked
Cultural Heritage) town meeting and opening
plenary session open to the public- ?The
Information Commons Today and Tomorrow: New
Research Collections Environments?- that will
address such concerns as public access and digital
information, database legislation, copyright
litigation, licensing concerns and distribution
issues
Workshops and sessions that will offer the
opportunity to learn and test leadership skills
for managing collaborative projects, and skills
for public speaking
Sessions that challenge traditional standards and
offer new insights about cataloging and archiving
visual media, including a new trend with sound art

Closing Plenary Session on the three leading art
historical image databases currently on the market
and their future visions
Tours to historic parks of St. Louis, Cahokia
Mounds World Heritage Site, two private homes by
Frank Lloyd Wright, Pulitzer Foundation Museum,
Saint Louis Art Museum,  Missouri Botanical
Garden, Mercantile Library and Western Historical
Manuscript Collection at the University of
Missouri--St. Louis, Maybeck Collection at
Principia College, Dana Thomas House and Abraham
Lincoln Home in Springfield, Illinois, and St.
Louis Architectural Adaptive Reuse
A special joint convocation to be held at the
historic Sheldon Concert Hall
