Selling/auctioning off collections

Hi, everyone. Some time ago we received a very large collection of railroad
books from the family of an avid collector. In organizing the materials we
see that many of the books, perhaps a quarter of the almost 10,000 books
donated, do not fit with our collecting policy. We want to explore ways to
sell off -- to dealers or auction houses -- those books we do not want.
Selling the books in a booksale is not an option for many reasons, including
the fact that these books will have no local appeal in the least and we
would certainly not get what they are worth.

Does anyone have experience with dealers and auctioneers in this type of
situation? How do we get the best price for the books? Can anyone
recommend a dealer in the New England or mid-Atlantic region who deals with
railroad books?

Many thanks for your advice, oh Archives list.
