Re: Article in Chronicle of Higher Ed

I don't know folks. It seems to me that while our thin skins are being
pricked by reactionary responses, we are possibly missing some of the
essential points. As we look within our individual organizations how many
Ms. Youngs do we have? Are we doing everything we are able to foster and
promote development within our staff? Is this something that is important?
Should this be one of the roles we pursue as professionals? Aside from the
personal decisions Ms. Young made, I think we should be asking ourselves
whether or not the next article will have our name attached to it. I think
we should see this as more of a wake up call to promote development than as
a criticism of the profession as a whole. For those of us working in the
University environment, I would hope that we identify the chasm between
staff and non-staff as an important issue in the article. Shouldn't we be
more concerned with reducing the gap and promoting archives and archival
development to all, rather than pointing out our views on the career choices
of MS. Young?

As to some of the comments made earlier, I think Twain said it best when he
commented on folks speaking up. Having said that I think some comments made
so far on this thread have removed all doubt.

Subject: Article in Chronicle of Higher Ed

Losing Status: A Former Faculty Member Takes a Staff Job.
This article appeared in today's edition of the Chronicle.

http://chronicle.com/jobs/2002/01/2002012901c.htm

Some sections of the Chronicle require a subscriber id and
password, but since I wasn't asked to sign in, I'm assuming
anyone can see the online article. It concerns a PhD who,
unable to find a tenured position, took a job in the archives
instead. It really merits a response or two from people in
our profession.
