Automated naming of scanned files?

Have you found a way to enter path and filename or just filenames for newly
scanned image-files into your cataloging in an automated or semi-automated
manner?

We are especially interested in ways to make our photo lab scanning and
metadata-acquisition more efficient on a fairly large scale.

Is anyone using Thumbsplus or similar software in this way?

Do you export "cataloging" metadata from that software and load it to your
main cataloging software periodically? Or is the scanner linked directly to
your main cataloging software?

Instead of the software generating the next filename according to a pre-set
pattern, is anyone using a pre-scripted, printed list of filenames (or paths
with filenames) so that the technician can wand the next filename into the
catalog record and/or into the scanner field to name the next scanned
image-file?

Thanks for advice,
Linda
