Re: Where can consultants help the most?

How about preservation?

At the last institution that I worked for, we contracted with a preservation specialist who performed an analysis of the condition of our archival holdings as well as the environment (light, temperature, relative humidity) in which the collections were housed.  For the couple of days that she spent on site, she provided an excellent report with many helpful-- and achievable--objectives that we could aim for.  Among these were better monitoring of the environment, guidelines for writing a thorough disaster preparedness plan, and suggestions for the reformatting of some of our most fragile scrapbooks.  It (her visit and subsequent report) was worth every dime that we spent on it.

If you have any further questions that I could answer, feel free to contact me.

We have the opportunity to apply for a grant through the state of Missouri
to bring an expert in for up to 5 days to consult with us concerning the
Archives.  The grant can cover any area related to archives EXCEPT building
planning and design.

We don't want to waste anyone's time looking at relatively simple matters
that we can easily research ourselves.

For what kinds of projects would a consultant be most helpful?  I would
appreciate any experiences or advice that you would want to share.  Thank
you very much.
