Re: Rare book Identification Supplies

Karol:

We make simple, folded, paper covers [on the same pattern
as we used a thousand years ago in school] using a Perma
Dur [archival] ledger paper. If a volume is very fragile we do
make a phase box. However, if it is "sort of fragile" we make
the paper cover to fold over on it self and close with Velcro
"buttons." An identifying label can be typed and placed on
the spine covering - as much identification as needed.

We, too, are very small but small is beautiful..............size does
not determine quality

Subject: Rare book Identification Supplies

| Dear all,
| We are a small public library with a small collection
| of much used -"rare" books in our Local History Room.
| We are in the process of recataloging many old titles
| and also adding new titles. In the past, barcodes and
| other marks of identification were stamped on the
| individual book (before I came!). Now we are trying to
| go to a bookmark with all the idenfication marks on
| that and not the book.
|
| However, a few staff object commenting that the
| bookmark will get lost, etc. Does anyone out there use
| any other type of identifying method? We are
| considering a wraparound/half sleeve - sort of cover
| that would go around the front cover and attach to
| itself, and putting the marks on that, but I am having
| trouble finding a supplier of those types of wraps,
| especially those that would be archivally sound.
|
| Any suggestions would be welcome! Thanks!
