The Geneva Convention called for better treatment of prisoners than what was
accorded some of our own citizens. A recurring theme of the Crossville
account was compliance with Geneva Convention. As an aside, an elderly
(senile?) fellow in the Crossville area at this time thought Yankee Union
soldiers were being interned....I guess he was unaware of the world
situation at large....

I've talked with Dryden several times (he's an alum and donated his papers
to us) and he was bitter about that for a very long time. I read the book a
while ago, but remember that there was specific detail about where the POW's
were held.

This was a fairly widespread gripe. A man here, who became prominent
later, spent some time as a POW guard before being shipped overseas.
He recalls that while escorting a small group of POWs (Italian or German
or both isn't clear) from one camp to another, having to stop at a small
restaurant for lunch. The POWs were allowed to enter and be served--
the small contingent of black guards had to remain outside.
