N40842
is back from its journey through the various stages of refurbishment. The
0360 Lycoming with; new ECI Titan cylinders, camshaft, vacuum pump, slick
magnetos, Skytec starter, fuel pump, carburetor; new accessories, sealed
battery, new engine mounts, hoses and baffles, turns the new 76 inch
Sensenich prop which pulls the aircraft at a steady 127 to 130 knots at 2500
rpm. The Knots2U kits helps a bit as well as having Tom Melchek at 5W8 rig
the airframe. The interior is comfortable and very quiet after being
insulated with closed cell vinyl insulating material which will not absorb
water or oil. Has fire retardant qualities and meets FAR 25.853a Appendix F. Avionics
have also been upgraded with a new
Garmin GNC 300XL
TSO, a new
Narco AT165/KT76
Transponder and a refurbished Century 1 autopilot and
a refurbished Michel TKM MX170B Nav/Com Transceiver. We also decided to get a
new prom set from CMC Electronics Inc. for the Northstar M1 LORAN. While the
new proms reduce operational area to cutoff between the two databases (East
and West) to Longitude W091, we fly on the East side of the Mississippi and
the LORAN works great for us. As a back up to all the avionics, we have a
portable Garmin GPS 196 which I like very much and if a total electrical
failures should happen, the 196 will run on batteries for a couple of hours.
During the paint process, we also replaced front windows with thicker 0.25
windshields and side windows with 3/16 in. plastic from LP Aero Plastics Inc. |
