I was out at Riverbend Park (northern Catawba Co.) this afternoon looking
for some migrants. There weren't many to be found. I did, however, run
into a student from Lenoir-Rhyne College who is doing a study on Eastern Box
Turtles. He said he comes to the park everyday to check on the turtles and
he asked what I thought about the heron colony. I said "What heron colony?!"
So he takes me to a fishing area at the park where you can see across the
river and sure enough behind some trees on the other shore is a stand of
tall pine trees with two Great Blue Heron nest in them. There were several
adults near the nests, but I didn't have my scope, so I couldn't tell about
nestlings. The trees are on private property, but the guy had been over
there and he said there were more nest that can't be seen from the park. I
am going to try to find out who the property belongs to and see if I can get
a closer look to see how many nest are there.
