Scissor-tailed flycatchers

Monroe, NC

Wednesday and Thursday evenings, the STs were observed for some time
(about 1 hours or more) hawking for insects in the fields surrounding
the tower. Towards the end of the observation period they both flew to
the top of the tower landing on a strut near the nest site. They then
proceeded to copulate. After copulation the female went to the nest and
the male proceeded to hawk for insects.

If the schedule is the same as last year, egg laying should take about 5
days and the young should hatch in about 2 weeks. The activity of the
STs should pick up when they start feeding young.
