Hello, this a March 6 update of the Carolina Rare Bird Alert featuring
birding news from North and South Carolina sponsored by the Carolina Bird
Club. Highlights on this report include:

GLAUCOUS GULL
ICELAND GULL
EURASIAN WIGEON
BLACK HEADED GULL
ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK
LECONTE'S SPARROW
AM. BITTERN
RED CROSSBILLS

A 1st winter GLAUCOUS GULL is being seen at the Horry County (SC) landfill.
This bird was seen as recently as 3-4. The landfill is located on Rte. 90
north of Conway, SC. Be sure to check in at the office before entering the
area. Also present at the landfill on 3-4 were 1st winter, 2nd winter and
adult (2) LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS.

ICELAND GULLS have been reported from the Horry County landfill in the last
couple of weeks. A 1st winter bird was also seen on the beach at Myrtle
Beach, SC near the Pavilion on 2-25.

Up to 2 male EURASIAN WIGEON can be seen at Greenfield Lake in Wilmington,
NC. Call Greg Massey at 910-383-3639 for directions and details.

The adult BLACK HEADED GULL at the Morehead City, NC wastewater treatment
plant was last reported 2-23 and has been missed since that date. Birders in
the area may still want to check the facility as the bird could still be
around.

A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was still present at Alligator River NWR as of 3-5. Check
the fields and sky along Milltail Rd. and Long Curve Rd. at the refuge.
Milltail Rd. runs south from US 64 and Long Curve runs east from Milltail.

A LECONTE'S SPARROW has been present at Ocean Isle (NC) at least since
12-31. This bird was seen again March 4. Also present since November in the
same spot is an AM. BITTERN, last seen 3-5. For details give me a call at
704-532-6336.

Look for RED CROSSBILLS near Jordan Lake, NC (Chatham county). A flock has
been present along Big Woods Rd. 1.6 miles north of US 64. Big woods Rd. is
on the west side of the lake. Pull off to the right onto a gravel parking
area and walk along the fence line into some open pine woods. Look and listen
for the crossbills there.

Thanks this week to Will Cook, Paula Wright, Greg Massey, John Fussell, Nan
Lloyd, and Bruce Howlett for their calls and reports.
