Hello, this is a December 4 update of the Carolina Rare Bird Alert featuring
birding news from North and South Carolina sponsored by the Carolina Bird
Club. Highlights on this report include:
CAVE SWALLOWS
VARIED THRUSH
GOLDEN EAGLE
COMMON BLACK-HEADED GULL
AM. WHITE PELICANS
KING EIDER
Birders in coastal areas of North and South Carolina ,especially the
Brunswick County NC beaches of Holden, Ocean Isle, and Sunset, should check
flocks of swallows for CAVE SWALLOWS. Large numbers of these swallows were
seen Nov. 28- Dec. 1 at these 3 beaches. Counts of more than a dozen were had
at several locations. CAVE SWALLOWS were also reported from Charleston
County, SC at Caw Caw Park, and from the Morehead City area of NC.
A VARIED THRUSH was seen on James Is., SC on 11-30 but has not been
relocated. Call Dennis Forsythe at 843-795-3996 for more information.
One or two imm. GOLDEN EAGLES have been seen in Brunswick County, NC; most
recently on 11-28 near Shallotte. A golden has been seen near Southport, NC
on a couple of occasions.
An imm. COMMON BLACK-HEADED GULL has been frequenting the north end of the
causeway at Lake Mattamuskeet.
AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS can be seen in NC at the Lake Mattamuskeet causeway
(1-3) birds, and Pea Island NWR on the Outer Banks (10-15) birds.
A female plumaged KING EIDER was seen 12-3 just north of Fort Fisher in NC.
Look in the ocean about 1/4 mile north of the Fort Fisher Historic site on US
421.
