Problems with the Great Backyard Bird Count

I live on the southern outskirts of Charleston, South
Carolina. 3 years ago during the "Great Backyard Bird
Count" (GBBC), we had Eurasian Collared-Doves in the
yard, as is often the case these days. Despite the
fact that these birds have been breeding in Coastal SC
for about 10 years (longer in FL and GA), they were
not on the checklist. Though we adhered to
instructions for writing in the bird, it never
appeared in the write-in totals. Attempts at
follow-up discussions (via email) with the GBBC folks
were never even acknowledged/answered. A letter
mailed to the Sapsucker Woods address in Ithica, NY
(attention Director, GBBC) got no response.

I have heard of the same thing happening to other
folks with Eurasian Collared-Doves that year and other
species in other years. Since the one of the main
purposes of the GBBC is to spot changes in status and
distribution of birds, such (in)actions defeat the
very purpose of the GBBC. However, I shall give the
BBC folks another chance and participate this year.

PS I see that EC Doves did show up in the totals the
next year...
