Outer Banks alcids....not

Today Clyde Sorenson, Phil Doerr, Steve Shultz and myself trekked to the
Outer Banks in search of alcids. We traveled from Kitty Hawk down to Nags
Head, Oregon Inlet, Pea Is beaches, and then rode the beach from Salvo as
far south as we could go (almost to Buxton). A combination of strong
southwest winds and fog just offshore really hindered us. We did however
dodge the rain for the most part. We saw no alcids, except for the dead
Razorbill we found on the beach south of Salvo. Saw lots of Common Loons
north of Nags Head. A total surprise here was a SOOTY SHEARWATER that came
in right over the surf for a great look. And later near Avon we had a MANX
SHEARWATER that swooped around through a Bonaparte's flock. We found several
dead cetaceans (none recent) on the beach south of Salvo, and had probably
better than 2 dozen Lesser Black-backeds along this stretch. On the way out
this morning we stopped in Elizabeth City and saw the grosbeak. He arrived
at the feeder about the same time we did. Most cooperative!
