The following are highlights of the 3 hour Sunday morning birdwalk at
Magnolia Plantation at 3550 Ashley River Road ( highway 61 ) northwest of
Charleston, SC. led by Perry Nugent at 8:30 am. A fee is charged.
March 2, 2003
69 Species were seen and/or heard on a day that started cloudy with cool
rain becoming warmer with lots of birds. The most interesting were; 20
Pied-billed Grebes, 10 Anhingas, 2 Green Herons, 4 Black-crowned Herons, 30
White Ibis, 1 adult Bald Eagle, 1 Sharp-shinned Hawk, 1 Cooper's Hawk, 2
Red-shouldered Hawks, 2 Red-tailed Hawks, 2 Common Snipe, 6 Yellow-bellied
Sapsuckers, 4 Purple Martins, 2000 Tree Swallows, 1 Northern Rough-winged
Swallow, 4 Eastern Bluebirds, 1 Hermit Thrush, 120 American Robins, 150
Cedar Waxwings, 4 Pine warblers, and 1 House Finch. Great Blue Herons and
Great Egrets ( saw one egret egg ) are beginning to nest in the Audubon
Swamp.
