Sure would be interesting to know where these birds came from. Our Uplands are still here on the Des Lacs refuge and we found over 30 nests this season which was quite remarkable in comparison to previous years. On one nest search drag, a high schooler almost stepped on 4 freshly hatched Uplands. Thankfully his foot missed the nearest by all of a millimeter and no harm was done. I wasn't so lucky in Illinois in 96 when I did crush 4 eggs as a female flushed just as I was planting my foot.

One other interesting note is on Piping Plovers. With water levels and rainfall so low this year in Dakota, many of the larger reservoirs were very low even earlier in the spring. Many Plover pairs that normally breed on smaller alkali ponds funneled into Lake Sakakawea (>200 pairs).
