David Wilcove--Ecology Seminar 9/4/03 (Fwd)

------- Forwarded message follows -------

The UNC Ecology Curriculum is hosting Dr. David Wilcove from the departments
of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and Public Affairs at Princeton
University and author of "The Condor's Shadow: The Loss and Recovery of Wildlife in America".

Dr. Wilcove will give a presentation titled ""Endangered Species in the
USA: How many are there and how can we save them?" on Thursday,
September 4, 2003, at 4:00 p.m., in room 128 Wilson Hall. Refreshments
will be served at 3:45 p.m.

"Those of us eager to save endangered species in the United States face
a fundamental dilemma: There are a lot of species in trouble; much of
their habitat resides on privately-owned lands, yet the very law
created to protect them--the Endangered Species Act--discourages many
landowners from participating in restoration efforts because they fear
the regulatory consequences of attracting endangered species to their
property. I will discuss a new estimate of the number of endangered
species in the USA and several new approaches (safe harbor agreements,
incentive payments, and mitigation banking) that encourage landowners
to assist endangered species without undermining the Endangered Species
Act."
