Awards & Stipend Committees announce this year's News Division Award winners

This year we will honor three long-time News Division members. Each honoree has contributed a great deal in time, expertise and friendship to news librarians around the world.

THE JOSEPH F. KWAPIL MEMORIAL AWARD:

John Jansson, Editor, Information Systems, for The Chicago Tribune is this year's Kwapil winner.

John holds a master's in journalism from Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism. He has spent 44 years in journalism at The Chicago Tribune. After a brief stint as a reporter and copy editor and numerous editorial production positions, he replaced Barbara Newcombe in 1985 as manager of the Tribune's Editorial Information Center.

Through the years, John has made presentations at SLA News Division conferences on topics ranging from the value of multi-level indexing for the text archival systems (he was against it) to choosing good employees (he wants sharks), to digitizing clip files (John calls that one a learning experience).

John Jansson He was a member of the Division's technology committee for several years. He also headed an ad-hoc group that developed a basic set of enhancement terms for photo archiving. The work was later adopted by the News Division as a recommended basic set of terms. In 1997 he received the Agnes Henebry Honor Award from the News Division.

His most recent endeavor is leading (he's fondly referred to as Mr. Metadata in news research circles) a team of news libraries in defining metadata fields for the next generation of photo archives for Tribune newspapers.

John stands out as the consummate professional news librarian, always willing to share his time and expertise.

Outside of work, John's primary interests are music, travel, friends and his family - wife Carol, sons Tom and Paul, daughters Kirsten and Ingrid, and granddaughters Anna and Elizabeth.

The Kwapil is the highest recognition of the division and is given for major achievement in the field of newspaper librarianship and outstanding service to the News Division. The recipient has usually actively participated in the Division's programs and projects for a continuous period of ten years.

THE AGNES HENEBRY ROLL OF HONOR AWARD WINNERS:

Judy Canter, San Francisco Chronicle Library Director, has held many positions in special libraries throughout her career, but her first love, her mother says, was teaching herself to read as a child by reading the daily newspaper.

Judy Cantor She attended Marquette University, first studying journalism and then switching to liberal arts after realizing writing wasn't what she wanted to do. She attended the University of Vienna her junior year and received her MLS at the University of Wisconsin.

Her first job in a news library was as head librarian at the Houston Chronicle, then on to Connecticut where she was senior reference librarian in the Xerox Education Publications Division. She then went to the Miami News and then on to the San Francisco Examiner in 1979.

In November 2000 the two San Francisco papers merged, The Chronicle and The Examiner, where she continues as library director for the Chronicle.

Judy still loves newspapers. She say's "there's nothing like the kick of a fresh newspaper each a.m. You talk about having passion in your life. I can get passionate about picking up and reading the new paper every day."

Judy joined the Division in 1967. She was chair of the Connecticut chapter in the mid-1970's, served as chair of the computer/technology committee, bylaws committee, did advertising for the newsletter in the 1980's, was treasurer of the News Division and has spoken on numerous News Division panels throughout the years.

Ginny Everett, Director Information Services, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, has also been named a 2003 winner of the News Division's Henebry award.

Ginny attended Wesleyan College and received her MLS from the University of Alabama. Her first library job was in a public library in Memphis. Nearly seven years later she joined the Commerical Appeal's news library as assistant director where she was quickly promoted to library director. In 1994, Ginny was named deputy director of News Research Services at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, where she now is Director of Information Services.

Ginny Everett Ginny was chair of the News Division from 1999 - 2000. She was president of the Special Libraries Association Mid-South Chapter, and a visiting faculty member at The Poynter Institute's "Leadership for the 21st Century," in 1999. She was a visiting faculty member at the University of Georgia's Journalism Department and was the guest speaker at the Southern Newspaper Publisher's conference in 2001. Ginny has traveled internationally, speaking on topics including "Media Librarians and the Challenge of New Media" at the Scandinavian News Research and Archive Seminar in Sweden.
