On the Move

Stacy Garcia is the Fort Worth Star-Telegram's new Chief Librarian. Formerly with the San Antonio Express-News and the Arizona Daily Star, Stacy was most recently a librarian with the Irving Public Library. Stacy replaces Jan Fennell who moved to Tennessee with her husband, who was named president at Tennessee Wesleyan College in Athens, Tennessee. Welcome back to the news fold, Stacy!

The San Antonio Express-News has a new researcher on board. Kevin Frazzini comes to the Lone Star State from Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he worked for four years as a copy editor and researcher at the Star Tribune while getting his master's degree in library science. Before that, he was a freelance book copy editor and worked as an editor at a local alternative weekly and two local monthly magazines.

In other Texas news, Melanie Mena left the Austin American-Statesman to join The Palm Beach Post as a news researcher.

Awards & Acknowledgments

Denise Jones, Research Manager at The News & Observer in Raleigh, NC, announced that news researcher Toby Lyles was a recipient of one of SLA's 2003 Diversity Leadership Development Awards. This award recognizes individuals from multi-cultural backgrounds who demonstrate a willingness to develop and strive for leadership opportunities within the association. Toby will receive a $1,000 stipend to attend the SLA conference in New York City and will be honored at the Awards Reception June 8th. Toby has been at the News & Observer since March 2001.

Cary Schneider, Editorial Library Manager at the Los Angeles Times, was a speaker at the National Association of Science Writers annual conference in Denver on February 13th. The panel's topic was "Beyond Google: New Strategies for Web Research," where Cary discussed the news research staff's strategies for compiling research as a result of the space shuttle accident. Other panelists included, Alan M. Schlein, author of "Find It Online: The Complete Guide to Online Research" and Michael Jensen, Director of Web communications, at The National Academies.

The Sporting News research center in St. Louis was featured on the CNBC morning show, Squawk Box. Steve Gietschier, Senior Managing Editor, News Research, and Jim Meier, Senior Editor, News Research, put the brief together for the segment's topic, "How The Sporting News Research Center uses its historical content to generate revenue for the company." While the news research staff wasn't interviewed, it afforded the editorial director and the company president to show how the research center contributes to the overall mission of the department and generates revenue for the company.

Diane Lamb at the News & Record library in Greensboro, NC, reported that a couple of her staffers are keeping busy outside the office. Text archivist David Bulgin is maintaining a 4.0 in his computer science classes, and he plans to use his newly acquired knowledge to develop databases for computer-assisted reporting projects. Marcus Green, photo archivist, helped with the 9/11 Photo Exhibition at the Greensboro Historical Museum and a fundraising event at the Civil Rights Museum by supplying historic photos for displays.

Belinda Harris of The Roanoke Times is the only news librarian in the first Virginia distance learning cohort. Of getting her MLS, Belinda says, "After working in a news library for 20 some years, I thought it was time to have the piece of paper to go with the title!"
