Todd Stabley, SCS classmate:  John was always an encouragement to me in high school. I am grateful for the role he played in my life during those formative years.

John's Church Family

[From the eulogy given by his father Larry]
"John had another family in Michigan, a church family. They loved him and he was special to an awful lot of people. John had accepted the Lord as his Savior when he was 4 years old. He wandered a bit from that when he was older, but in the last few years he had returned to his roots. Some people in yet another of his families know of his spiritual side which was deep and loving. I will tell you I was never prouder of John than I have been these last few years. That's saying a lot."

[Tim Woll, SCS – '84]
"First, John was a very good friend. He was a friend you could count on, and that is something I really valued.

Another thing that impressed me was John's desire to serve. He wanted to be a pilot—and did it—but for him it was really about serving his country. I never saw John so angry as the day that Ronald Reagan was shot. He was so livid that someone would dare shoot his President. He respected the office and his country more than most of us could understand. We went for a training run that day for track, and I could hardly keep up with him. He ran like a man possessed! So while it was very difficult to hear that John had died, it was a comfort to know that he died serving his country, doing what he loved.

During our years at Southfield Christian School and after, I admired how focused John was. He had a goal to be in the military and did what it took to make that dream happen. As students we suffered through countless Cross Country and Track practices together. We were co-captains of the track team and had a common goal, and that was to win. Winning championships was what we strived for and what we accomplished. He was a winner until the day he died."

[John's sister Amy read this verse at John's funeral at Point Loma]
"I have fought the good fight.  I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.  Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day, and not only
me, but also to all who have longed for His appearing."
-II Timothy 4: 7-8
