Elaine,
How does the average person know which form of calcium to use?
I've used oyster shell flour exclusively, calcium carbonate.
Should we use a calcium combination?
I don't remember the source, but I remember having read that different
parts of the country do better with one form of calcium than another.
Is this so?
Thank you,
Judi

Yes, you could add calcium sulfate, but I prefer calcium nitrate, if you
need N, or calcium carbonate if you need to chew up some hydrogen ions,
or eggshells (calcium carbonate with protein), or calcium hydroxide, if
you need to mess more with the chemistry of hydrogen.
But please make sure to not add more than 100 pounds of any of these
salts per 900 pounds of compost (think of it as a 1:10 dilution if you
need to).
More than that and you get too many things dying from the salt effect.
