movie madness!!!

Jeez, has't there been enough already. If you want a real story, see a
documentary. Anyway, with all this talk of the poor quality of "based on a
true story" pics, why hasn't anyone addressed one that was done well. I for
one thoroughly enjoyed Jim Sheridan's Some Mother's Son, the story of the
Irish hunger strikes of 1981. There were inaccuracies. they even made up
the lead character; however that did not take away from the movie in any
way. Does it matter that Geroid Quigley didn't die on hunger strike? No,
not really. By using Geroid as the lead character the story became easier
to tell to a wider audience. For his part, Mr. Sheridan did what can be
called an archival service by getting to IRA sources that would never end up
in any archive. And sure, the British security agents could have been
portrayed closer to the truth. Then again, does anyone want to sit around
and watch two and a half hours of an Irish pow being beaten to an inch of
his life. No, didn't think so.

Happy Friday,
Patrick Connelly
