Shelving units for storing newspapers

I do volunteer work with our local historical society. We have an extensive
collection of 19th century newspapers and have recently completed an
inventory of each issue. We realize that the present method of storing them
on plastic shelving units is both dangerous and unacceptable. We are in the
process of researching what type of shelving might be best to store them on.
As a newcomer to this list I can already see that there is a great deal of
expertise out there.

Specifically, has anyone had experience with storing newspapers on solid
metal shelves, versus wire shelves (similar to the type used in ovens). One
argument I have heard is that the wire shelves provide better air
circulation. I'm not convinced.

I should mention that all the newspapers are either bound with covers, or
bundled in heavy-duty archival paper and tied. Any thoughts would be
appreciated.
