The United States of America is a federal union of 50 states and a capital district. The northeastern state of New York includes in the southeast the great port and financial center of New York City and Long Island extending to the east of the city; in the west and north it extends to Lakes Erie and Ontario and the lower St. Lawrence River. Rich in waterways, New York is equally rich in lighthouses. This page lists lighthouses of Nassau and Suffolk Counties, which occupy most of Long Island in the southeastern corner of the state. The New York City boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens occupy the western end of Long Island; their lighthouses are described on the New York City and Hudson River page. There are additional pages for Western New York and for Central and Northern New York. Long Island stretches 118 miles (190 km) east northeast from New York Harbor to Montauk Point, with a maximum north-to-south width of 23 miles (37 km). The north side of the island faces the state of Connecticut across Long Island Sound and the south coast faces the Atlantic Ocean. The Latimer Reef Light in Long Island Sound is listed on this page since careful study of nautical charts shows it is in New York and not in Connecticut, where it is often listed. Navigational aids in Long Island are operated by the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound, with Aids to Navigation Teams based at New Haven, Connecticut, for north shore lights and at Hampton Bays, New York, for the south shore. However ownership (and sometimes operation) of historic lighthouses has been transferred to local authorities and preservation organizations in many cases. ARLHS numbers are from the ARLHS World List of Lights. Admiralty numbers are from volume J of the Admiralty List of Lights & Fog Signals. USCG numbers are from Volume I of the USCG Light List. |
