Welcome Traveller...
Archipelago is friendly, well-crafted Multi-User Domain/Dungeon found on the Internet by telnetting to island.essex.co.uk 24, and is physically located in Colchester, England. Archipelago was founded in November 1993 by Alastair Neil (Ponder) while he was working at the University of Essex in Englandthe birthplace of MUDs. The code used for Archipelago is based upon the DIKU MUD descendant Circle 2.2 and has over two years of extensive code modifications with new enhancements and refinements to the gaming system. Archipelago´s staff of immortals, lead by the co-implementors, Ponder and Kalliste, have devised a new magic system based upon Ars Magica role-playing game published by Atlas Games, added features such as scabbards and variable room illumination, while creating a realistic, but playable gaming environment.
The builders, using the completely online creation editors, have built a detailed world for Archipelago that is totally original and unique to the mud. Archipelago´s team of experienced builders lead by Ansalon, Grace, Magnifico, Ratatosk, Saladin, and Xero have taken a huge leap beyond the traditional DIKU-style of throw-away rooms, sword-fodder mobs, and descriptionless objects and has richly described the world. Each room/area on Archipelago has its own individual, unique description. The mobs are intelligent with tracking mobs, citizen mobs that help each other, mobs with memories, and mobs that can answer questions. Objects have descriptions explaining their function and showing unique features. After adventuring on Archipelago for a short while, other muds will seem flat and missing.
