Using a farm analogy to name the pieces and players in our publishing system, we think of our process as a community effort to grow and nurture ideas until they bear fruit.
Our knowledge farm is a shared online database designed to help researchers, authors and editors create publications for EcoAccess. Our knowledge farm contains four sections:
The seed bank is where ideas are collected, sorted and discussed. Some ideas will perish, while others will grow into publications.
The garden is where ideas are cultivated into manuscripts. People working on an EcoAccess publication can share notes and drafts in a plot in the garden. The garden is the online repository for all the research and writing that goes into every EcoAccess publication.
The kitchen is where designers work on the layout and typesetting of a publication, turning a manuscript into a proof. It is where the "look and feel" of a publication can be explored.
The pantry (or "private collection") is where final proofs of a publication go, packaged up and ready to be reviewed and then copied into the public collection.
Publications can range from the very simple (e.g., a link in our directory), to the complex (e.g., an interactive atlas). The purpose of every publication is to empower readers to make informed decisions about environmental issues.
The EcoAccess public collection is the set of publications that we make available to our readers through our web site. Our goal is to serve our readers with a well-organized collection of accurate and useful information.
Curators manage ideas and discussions in the seed bank.
Researchers collect information and add it to plots in the garden.
Authors create original manuscripts for EcoAccess.org from the information researchers collect. Authors can be computer programmers, artists, writers or anyone else who produces original work for EcoAccess.
Editors edit the original work produced by authors.
Publishers are the lead editors for publications. The publisher decides whether to send a manuscript or a proof out for review. The publisher is responsible for making sure the reviewed manuscript or proof gets revised and eventually published in the EocAccess public collection.
Designers work in the kitchen to turn a manuscript into a proof. This typically involves converting from Microsoft Word format to standards-compliant HTML format.
Reviewers check manuscripts and proofs for technical accuracy. Reviewers are experts in their field.
Gardeners create and maintain plots in the garden in our knowledge farm, making sure that researchers, authors and editors are working productively together to turn ideas into manuscripts.
