Diane Miller Sponsler Logsdon retired June 20 as Library Director of The Pantagraph newspaper in Bloomington, Illinois. Diane became library director in 1974 and had been at the Pantagraph 35 years.

Diane was the News Division program chair for the Boston conference in 1986 and was chair of the Division in 1987. She received the Shoemaker Award of Merit in 1987 and the Agnes Henebry Award of Merit in 1995. She was also chair of the Small Libraries Committee for a number of years.

Diane plans to spend time enjoying her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, traveling with husband, Brad, and continuing her freelance writing. She hopes to keep in touch with her many friends in the Division of which she has been a member since 1974.

Congratulations and best wishes, Diane!

Awards & Acknowledgments

Nisa Asokan, news researcher at The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, wrote an article that appeared in Searcher magazine's May 2003 issue in which she talks about the "glory" of being a newspaper librarian.

The article, titled "Reference Gymnastics: A Sampler of Creative Search Methods for Librarians on a Tight Deadline," offers some unconventional ways to use commonly accessed Web sites when time and money are both at a minimum.

In June, Julie Domel, news researcher at the San Antonio Express-News, began writing a weekly column for the paper's Web site called "Don't Get Me Started" in which, as the site's "resident grouser," she tackles an issue that bugs her. An index to her columns can be found at: http://news.mysanantonio.com/index.cfm?xla=saen&xlb=40. Be sure to check out the user responses.

The news research staff at The Washington Post wishes to acknowledge the work of staff researchers Julie Tate and Meg Smith who contributed to the April 27 page 1 story, "In Their Own Words: In Troops' Final Words, Faith and Grace Wartime Deaths Give Meaning to Each Syllable in What Became Last Letters Home." Text of the poignant letters can be found at: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/nation/nationalsecurity/

Jennifer Belton, Manager of The Washington Post's Historic News Archives, reports that ProQuest has completed the digitization of The Post's news archive from 1877 to 1977. She is now looking toward the next phase of the project in which whole new lines of information products will be created in conjunction with the archive.
