What's New in the Online Library of Selected
Images? -- Entries posted in October - December 1998
- To round out October, we have added to the coverage of the
Pearl Harbor
Raid with new pages on the Attacks
off the West Side of Ford Island, including the sinking of
USS Utah (AG-16) and damaging of USS Raleigh (CL-7)
and Curtiss
(AV-4).
New ships joining the Online Library during the week include
the aircraft carriers Kearsarge
(CV/CVA/CVS-33) and Cowpens
(CVL-25), the repair ship Vestal
(AR-4) and the ex-British "Flower" class corvette
USS Intensity (PG-93).
Our presentation on Battleships
has been expanded with new coverage of the Nevada
(BB-36 & 37) and Pennsylvania (BB-38 & 39) classes. As is
frequently the case, there are a few "unlinked" links
in some of these pages, but those will be taken care of soon.
30 October 2000
- Our coverage of the Pearl
Harbor Raid of 7 December 1941 has been significantly expanded
with the addition of Overall
Views of the Pearl Harbor Attack, "Battleship
Row" during the Pearl Harbor Attack (including pages
on all the ships in that location during the raid) and Damaged
Ships after the Attack. There are still a few "loose
ends" in all that, but nothing that won't be tied up in
the next few weeks.
We also added pages on two ships and one person that are connected
to the subject of Pearl Harbor: the battleship USS Nevada
(BB-36), the light cruiser USS Raleigh
(CL-7) and Rear Admiral Isaac
C. Kidd, who lost his life when USS Arizona was destroyed.
The week's final new additions are pages on the heavy cruiser
Los Angeles (CA-135),
another participant in the Korean War, and the 1920s humorous
photograph (with poem), "A
Sailor's Prayer".
23 October 2000
- Our second week of work on the Pearl
Harbor Raid of 7 December 1941 added comprehensive coverage
on two relevant elements: Japanese
Forces in the Pearl Harbor Attack and aerial photographs
of Pearl Harbor in
1940-1941. Both new sections include two or more pages of
images.
The week's new ships are: the battleship USS Oklahoma
(BB-37), which was sunk during the Pearl Harbor attack; the
escort aircraft carrier USS Badoeng
Strait (CVE-116), an important Korean War participant;
and and the light cruiser USS Helena
(CL-50), which suffered torpedo damage at Pearl Harbor, but
was repaired and saw much action during the Guadalcanal and Central
Solomons campaigns of 1942-43.
16 October 2000
- This week opens what will be an extensive presentation on
the great event that marked America's formal entry into World
War II: Japan's Pearl
Harbor Raid of 7 December 1941. The initial page offers a
historical overview and special image selection, but much more
will be forthcoming during the next few months.
Our new ships this week include the battleship USS Mississippi
(BB-41), the aircraft carrier USS Antietam
(CV/CVA/CVA-36) and the long-serving heavy cruiser USS Saint Paul (CA-73).
Both of the latter ships were active participants in the Korean
War.
9 October 2000
- New postings during the last week of September concentrated
on adding new ships to the Online Library. These include the
battleship USS Pennsylvania
(BB-38), the small aircraft carrier USS San
Jacinto (CVL-30), the destroyer USS Downes
(DD-375), the dock landing ship USS Plymouth
Rock (LSD-29) and the landing craft repair ship USS Indra (ARL-37).
Also posted during the week was a presentation on Admiral Harold M. Martin, who
commanded the Seventh Fleet during the Korean War's second year.
2 October 2000
- In an effort to provide "something for (nearly) everyone",
(so long as such folks will be satisified with 20th Century surface
combatant ships and the Korean War), during September's third
week the Online Library gained a new aircraft carrier, a battleship,
a cruiser, a destroyer, two frigates, two Korean warships and
a new Korean War section.
The latter includes the opening portions of the period from late
January 1951 through the end of June when conflict
stabilized after more than six months of extreme operational
volatility. There is still quite a lot of content to be added
to this section, so most of its links will temporarily lead nowhere,
but the extensive portion on Aircraft
Carrier Operations is ready for perusal.
Our new carrier is USS Bon
Homme Richard (CV/CVA-31), which saw combat in three
wars: World War II, Korea and Vietnam. USS Idaho
(BB-42) is the week's battleship. The cruiser is USS Worcester (CL-144),
one of the Navy's last "gun" cruisers Continuing the
clues to our next big project is an extensive presentation on
the destroyer USS Cassin
(DD-372). Final additions include the World War II frigates
USS Sausalito (PF-4)
and USS Rockford (PF-48),
which respectively became the Republic of Korea Navy ships Imchin and Apnok during the
early 1950s.
25 September 2000
- The most recent seven days have produced progress on several
fronts, with the posting of several pages on the Republic
of Korea Forces, thus finishing our Korean War section on
the United Nations and
Republic of Korea Forces, and the completion of our presentation
on CSS Tennessee,
which now includes extensive pictorial coverage on her role in
the Battle of Mobile Bay in August 1864, plus links to views
of three of her officers and two of her consorts in the Mobile
Bay action.
Those three officers are Admiral Franklin
Buchanan, Commander James
D. Johnston and Surgeon Daniel
B. Conrad, all former U.S. Navy officers who "went South"
in April-May 1861. The Battle of Mobile consorts are the Confederate
gunboats Gaines
and Selma.
We also made a page on Selma's Commanding Officer, First
Lieutenant Peter U. Murphey,
another former member of the USN.
A hint of things to come is provided with the addition of our
latest battleship, USS Arizona
(BB-39), whose tragic loss is memorialized by the beautiful
USS Arizona Memorial
at Pearl Harbor.
18 September 2000
- In the past week, our section on the United
Nations and Republic of Korea Forces in the Korean War grew
slightly, with the completion of a page on Japanese
Contributions to the war effort, especially the activities
of the Shipping Control Administration Japan, or ScaJap.
Our de facto "Person of the Week" is Admiral
Arthur D. Struble,
who led the Seventh Fleet during the Korean War's first nine
months.
Among ships newly posted are three aircraft carriers that saw
extensive Korean War service: The Essex class carrier
Philippine Sea (CV/CVA/CVS-47)
and the escort carriers Bairoko
(CVE-115) and Sicily
(CVE-118). The Civil War is represented by two more river
monitors: USS Chickasaw
and USS Winnebago,
plus their erstwhile opponent in the 5 August 1864 Battle of
Mobile Bay, the Confederate ironclad ram CSS Tennessee,
which was taken into the U.S. Navy after she was captured. Work
on Tennessee is not quite finished, but next week should
see its completion.
11 September 2000
- We have completed our presentation on Korean
War Logistics & Support with the preparation of an "Overview
and Selected Images" page. Following in its wake are pages
on United Nations and
Republic of Korea Forces. Several of these have been finished
and posted, with others to follow soon.
People added this week include three Korean War heros, one Naval
Aviator and two Corpsmen, all posthumously awarded the Medal
of Honor for their bravery in attempting to save other servicemen:
Lieutenant (Junior Grade) John
Kelvin Koelsch; Hospitalman John
E. Kilmer and Hospitalman Richard
De Wert. We also opened up a fresh "People" category,
People--United Kingdom (Great
Britain) with a presentation on the Royal Navy's commander
in the Korean War Zone during most of that conflict's first year:
Admiral Sir William
G. Andrewes.
Our "a few more ships almost every week" policy has
produced the following new entries: USS Tennessee
(BB-43), one of World War II's most extensively modernized
older battleships; and USS Kickapoo
(1864-1874), a Civil War river monitor. Also, another class
has been added to our coverage of U.S.
Navy Battleships, this one on the two-ship Tennessee
Class (BB-43 & BB-44) built under the Fiscal Year 1916 program.
