Individual Artists

Open Art handles the arrangements with the individual artists who come to your school. Open Art director Judith Toy personally offers residences in either poetry or puppetry. Please visit Puppetry of Judith Toy for a look at Toy’s puppets.

When Ms. Toy is invited to your school for a residency in puppetry, she will need a high-ceilinged room in which to meet with her core students and build the giant puppets. She will provide the school with a list of recyclable items which can be brought in by students, or by her.

Ms. Toy will be on-site for three weeks, mornings only. She will visit two classrooms per day, during a three-week residency, suggesting puppet projects that each class can undertake with their teachers.

The core group will write a puppet play, build the puppets and perform the play. Her residency will culminate in an assembly performance which will be performed by the core group and two "buddy" classes in the school. The community will be invited and photos will go to the local papers. (Great photo opp!)

One of these classes will be designated as the voice chorus and will be provided with a script to follow (no memorization). One classroom will be designated as the orchestra, and will make "instruments" from junk. We will need two rehearsal periods of one and a half hours, with all performers (core group plus the orchestra and the voice chorus).
